Star formation rate for isolated Sa and Sb models at intervals of 10 Myr. The Sb model with a higher gas content shows star formation rates roughly an order of magnitude higher than the Sa model. Initial bursts of new stars in both models are contributed from the gas compression of gas into density waves and the absence of supernova feedback from young stellar populations.
