Radii (open blue circles) of the emitting regions, measured in the cosmological rest frame. Episode 1 radius ranges from ~ 109 cm to ~ 1010 and expands at Γ ≈ 1 (Izzo et al. 2012b). The Episode 3 radius, in the early phases of the steep decay, starts from a value of ~ 7 × 1012 cm and expands at Γ ≈ 2. The Episode 2 rest-frame duration is indicated by the shaded purple region. The expansion velocity at late times is expected to approach the asymptotic value of 0.1c observed in the optical spectra (Della Valle 2011), in the absence of any further acceleration process.
