Ratio between the recombination rate Γrec and the ionization rate ΓUV − ion, as a function of the altitude counted from the planet center and the electron density at 3 Rp. Solid and dashed lines show isovalues of the ratio. In the striped red zone photoionization is dominant (ΓUV − ion ≥ 100Γrec) and the probability that an ionized particle recombines is close to zero. With altitudes below the equilibrium altitude (solid black line), the lifetime of a neutral magnesium atom is significantly extended, and in the blue striped zone below the recombination altitude (solid blue line) the probability that it is ionized is close to 0 (Γrec ≥ 100ΓUV − ion).

Current usage metrics show cumulative count of Article Views (full-text article views including HTML views, PDF and ePub downloads, according to the available data) and Abstracts Views on Vision4Press platform.

Data correspond to usage on the plateform after 2015. The current usage metrics is available 48-96 hours after online publication and is updated daily on week days.
