Table 2

Derived quantities for the HDF850.1 merger galaxies, and the effect of lensing.

Parameter North South Dust
galaxy galaxy continuum,
C+ line C+ line both galaxies

Uncorrected for lensing:

Measured (Δα,Δδ) offset from elliptical (−0.71′′, −0.40′′) (−0.68′′, −0.71′′) (−0.68′′, −0.58′′)
Apparent luminosity [L] LC+ = 2.8 × 109 LC+ = 1.2 × 109 LFIR = 6.0 × 1012
Apparent line luminosity [K km s-1 pc2]

Corrected for lensing:

True, undeflected (Δα,Δδ) offset from elliptical (−0.45′′, −0.25′′) (−0.50′′, −0.50′′) (−0.47′′, −0.43′′)
lens magnification factor 1.7 1.5 1.6
Corrected luminosity [L] LC+ = 1.6 × 109 LC+ = 8.2 × 108 LFIR = 3.8 × 1012
Corrected line luminosity [K km s-1 pc2]
Gas Mass (H2+He) [M] Mgas = 1.5 × 1010 Mgas = 7.5 × 109
Corrected angular diameters  0.4′′  0.3′′  0.4′′
True radius 1.3 kpc 0.9 kpc 1.3 kpc

Notes. Positions are from Gaussian fits in the (u,v) plane, with errors of ± 0.004s in RA and ± 0.03′′ in Dec. LFIR is for emitted wavelengths 40 to 120 μm; LIR (5 to 1000 μm) is typically 30% higher. Lens model: singular isothermal sphere at z = 1.224, with velocity dispersion σ = 150 km s-1. Derived values are for DA = 1.299Gpc at z = 5.185, and 6.295 kpc(arcsec)-1, for assumed values of ΩM = 0.27, ΩΛ = 0.73, and H0 = 71 km s-1 Mpc-1 (for formula, see e.g., Buchalter et al. 1998).
