Same as Fig. 1 but for τ Cet in the thermal imaging scenario described in Sect. 3.3.2, observing at 10 μm with an instrument similar to E-ELT/METIS. The planets here are detected mainly via their thermal emission. From left to right, the star symbols and error bars show the contrast expected for planets candidates b, c, d, e, and f (Tuomi et al. 2013) over the range of albedos and recirculation parameters described in Sect. 2.4. If confirmed, planet f would be amenable to direct characterization of its thermal emission.
