Early concept of the adaptive phase mask, using a gas bubble immersed in a layer of oil between two optical windows, whose thickness can be controlled to modulate the optical path difference. Owing to the coupling between diameter and thickness, this concept could only work over a narrow wavelength range. See text for details.
