Notes.

(a)

Av estimates derived by de-reddening J − H, H − Ks colours of each source in a near-IR colour–colour diagram (Fig. 10).

(b)

Extinction towards the H i recombination region at the base of each outflow, assuming case B recombination theory for ne = 109 cm-3, Te = 2000 K (Hummer & Storey 1987): Av =  −69.44 × log (1.25 ×  [I(9 − 4)/IBrγ] ).

(c)

Extinction towards the FEL region at the jet base. Values are calculated from three pairs of lines: Av =  −132 × log (0.262 ×  [I1.600/I1.712]), Av =  −208 × log (0.499 ×  [I1.664/I1.745]), and Av =  −104 × log (0.201 ×  [I1.644/I1.810]).

(d)

Extinction towards the H2 emission line (MHEL) region associated with each jet, derived from the ratio of the 1–0 S(1) and 1–0 Q(3) lines: Av =  −114 × log (0.704 ×  [IS1/IQ3] ).

(e)

Range of extinction values towards the MHEL region, derived by minimising the scatter of data points in H2 excitation diagrams; see Appendix C for details.

(f)

Extinction estimates taken from the literature; the superscript refers to the following publications: 1. Podio et al. (2006); 2. Antoniucci et al. (2008); 3. Takami et al. (2006); 4. Giannini et al. (2004) (measured only in the extended molecular outflow).
