Evolution of box-average quantities (clockwise: kinetic energy, magnetic energy, enstrophy and temperature) before and after inserting the magnetic field. The MRI quickly takes over, on its characteristic short timescale. No evidence of synergy between the two instabilities is observed. The saturated state of the combined baroclinic+MRI resembles an MRI-only scenario.
