Evidence for nine planets in the HD 10180 system

A re-analysis of radial velocimetry data acquired by the HARPS spectrograph on star HD 10180 points toward the existence of nine planets around this star! This is at least two more planets than was previously thought. The orbital periods range from 1.18 to 2300 days and the planetary masses between 1.3 and 65 Earth masses. The discovery has been made thanks to a Bayesian statistical model that is more sensitive to weak signals. It needs to be confirmed by additional observations, but indicates without doubt that this is a very rich planetary system.
