Knowledge of the chemical composition of the early solar nebula is essential input for understanding the evolution of the solar system. One approach to obtaining such information is to observe young low-mass protostars, and the study by Caux et al. highlighted in this issue is a step in this direction. The authors did a spectral survey of the young solar type protostar IRAS 16293-2422 and detected 4000 lines from at least 70 species. In this way, they provided the basis for understanding the composition in the inner 1000 AU of the system.
