Enhanced [CII] emission in a z=4.76 submillimetre galaxy

The APEX telescope (Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment) has been used to detect the redshifted [CII]-158 micron line emission in the z=4.76 submillimeter galaxy LESS J033229.4-275619, the highest redshift for a [CII] detection in a submillimeter selected system. The very high luminosity ratio of 10000 between [CII] and CO points to low metallicity, such as found in dwarf galaxies. Eventually, the [CII] line might be a better tracer of molecular gas than CO at high redshift.
