CO observations of symbiotic stellar systems

by V. Bujarrabal, J. Mikołajewska, J. Alcolea, and G. Quintana-Lacaci, A&A 516, A19 alt

The authors present IRAM observations of R Aqr and CH Cyg, two prototypical symbiotic stars. Emission of 12CO J=1-0 and J=2-1 was detected in both stars, compatible with the emission from a small shell around the Mira-type star between the red giant and the companion hot white dwarf. The mass-loss rates are somewhat higher than in standard AGB stars. The authors suggest that the limited extent of the molecular gas in symbiotic systems comes mainly from photodissociation by white dwarfs.
