Sketch of the rotating star with an equatorial spot. The cyan circle is the star, while the blue and red colours indicate, respectively, the equator and the rotation axis of the star. The brown line denotes the plane of the disk seen edge on. Dashed patterns indicate a position under the disk with respect to the lobe under consideration. The thick black pattern marks the extension of the spot along the equator, with the solid and dashed arcs representing, respectively, the part of the spot lying inside the lobe of interest and that on the opposite side. The pictures inside the boxes show four template positions of the spot for the azimuthal angles given in the top right corner of the boxes. The point of view of the four panels is along the rotation axis, as indicated by the arrow in the figure to the right, which shows the star as seen by an observer whose line of sight lies in the plane of the disk and is perpendicular to the star rotation axis.
