Three typical phases in the formation of the mercury mirror. Accelerating the rotation first spreads out the mercury (left). However, holes appear and filling them requires the rotation of the mirror to be rapidly decelerated and then accelerated again (centre). When the holes are filled, the control loop is engaged to rotate the mirror at the correct speed (right). These tests were first performed in a secure enclosure at AMOS.
