Bump strength versus UV-to-optical slope of the extinction curve for some selected simulations considering or not the formation of CO as a limiter to carbonaceous grain growth (as indicated in the panel). Assuming capture of C atoms in molecules which are not available for grain growth has the effect of reducing the amount of small carbonaceous grains in the ISM and, hence, the bump strength of the extinction curve.
