Distributions of η_dyn, db defined in Eq. (1) for barred galaxies that lose their bar and undergo a major merger. This expression assesses whether or not the disc galaxy experienced a recent merger at the moment of bar dissolution, and values between −2 and 2 indicate that the galaxy is still influenced by a recent merger. Here, we see that 50 per cent of the disc galaxies that have lost their bar experienced a recent merger. Lenticular galaxies are not included because of the lower sample size we have for lenticular galaxies that have lost their bar.
