Galaxies are classified as either star-forming or quiescent in bins of redshift by selection in rest frame NUV − r and r − J colors, following Ilbert et al. (2013). The rest-frame J band is not directly measured at z ≳ 3.5 and so the sloped part of the selection box is dashed to indicate that the r − J colors are strongly model dependent. Typical uncertainties for the rest-frame colors of the star-forming and quiescent subsamples are estimated as medians of the nearest observed-frame bands, consistent with the derivation of the rest-frame colors.
