Exposure-corrected images of the Vela SNR displayed in the broad band (left) and as an RGB false-color image (right) in the energy range 0.2–2.3 keV. Gaussian smoothing with a kernel size of σ = 45″ was applied to both images, and a logarithmic brightness scale was used. The contours in the left panel trace the heavily smoothed 0.2–2.3 keV emission at levels of 1.4 × 10−2, 4.0 × 10−2, 8.0 × 10−2, 1.6 × 10−1 ct s−1 arcmin−2.
