LHS: SDSS high-latitude photometry illustrating the two blue-star populations, 0.3 ≤ (gr) ≤ 0.6. The bluer, becoming dominant at fainter magnitudes, is the halo. The less blue, becoming less dominant at r ~ 17, is the thick disc. RHS: the same stars observed in VHS [Ks, H–Ks] photometry, which is the source of photometry applied by Gaia-ESO.
