Observation of a mutual approximation (i.e. close encounter between two natural satellites). The apparent distance between the two satellites (blue dots in the top panel) is frequently measured and a polynomial is used to fit these observationsand estimate the central instant of the close encounter (typically fourth-order polynomial, displayed in red). The residuals between the apparent distances measurements and the fitted polynomial are shown in black (bottom panel).
