Net rate N at location L_em (see Fig. 4) and height of maximum emissivity in He I D₃. The model atom incorporates 12 levels in neutral helium (16 in total). We have combined many of these levels to increase the readability of the diagram, but they are treated separately in the calculations (see Sect. 2 and Fig. 2.2).
