Copy hierarchy used to balance the computational load for subgrids with strong contention. The subgrid depicted in orange contains a source, has a copy level of 2, and is surrounded by four subgrids with a copy level of 1 that are in turn surrounded by normal subgrids with a copy level of 0. In this example, seven additional subgrids are created that each act as independent subgrids during the photon-propagation step.
