Left (panel a): simulation of the motion of a polarized, orbiting hot spot for a poloidal magnetic field configuration, for 30° inclination and three different orbital radii R = 4, 8, 12 Rg (panel b) and R = 8 Rg at varying inclination. The observed July 28 flare polarization data are consistent with the Q/U loop signature and period for the 8 Rg, i = 30° curve (but at lower polarization fraction).
