Schematic view of the photometric aspect of the Sun as seen from Venus. The angle γ is the solar-zenith angle, in other words, the angle between the zenith and the center of the Sun. The system of coordinates (x, y) is centered on the Sun, and the y-axis points to the zenith. Hence, the ordinate of the solar region closest to the horizon is γy. All variables are angles.
