A one-dimensional sketch figure that illustrates the difficulties encountered in detecting embedded clusters. The bottom black line shows the extinction profile of a molecular cloud. As a result of the extinction, background stars in the field show an underdensity. Even if an embedded cluster is present, the total observed star surface density does not reveal it, making it virtually impossible to detect the cluster without the use of the technique described in this paper.
