Three examples of very metal-poor RAVE spectra with typical S/N values of ~ 50. The top spectrum belongs to the star with the lowest metal abundance in the catalog, CD -38 245. The parameter values for the top spectrum were adopted from Hansen et al. (2013), the parameters for the middle spectrum from Carrera et al. (2013), and for the bottom spectrum we used parameters from Ruchti et al. (2013). Note the degeneracy between the shape of the Ca ii lines of cooler giants with lower metallicities and warmer turn-off stars with higher metallicities.
