The colours indicate the convective velocities within the FeCZ (in km s-1); the black dashed line superposed lies one mixing-length away from the upper border of the convective region. The colours in the top bar indicate the expected velocity fluctuations at the surface (see also Fig. 4 for a direct comparison between vc and vsurf).
