Cross section through a region of inhomogeneously distributed gas with a fractal density distribution (scaled to 50 hydrogen atoms per cm^-3) which is used for the 3D simulations shown in Figs. 4 to 9. The volume has a size of (40 pc)³ and is resolved into 101³ grid cells.
