Total radial kinetic energy as a function of the very first orbits for three simulations mentioned in Sect. 3.3, which differ only in their spatial resolution. At around orbit 5, the sonic instability starts to operate in all three cases, and as a result, the radial kinetic energy rises rapidly. The growth rates were obtained by applying an exponential fit to the first exponential increase.
