Sketch of the vorosity effect in a model with clump column mass δm, clump velocity span δν, and mean velocity separation between clumps Δν. In the case of an inter-clump medium with negligible mass, all line photons with resonance frequencies that do not coincide with any velocities δν covered by the clumps will escape the wind without ever interacting with it, through the porous channels in velocity space set by fvorδν/Δν. Note that in the special case of the radially compressed model discussed in text, δm = δmsm, where δmsm is the column mass contained within Δν in the initially smooth wind, which has here been swept up in the clump.
