Measured and estimated spicule widths as a function of height in the atmosphere relative to τ5000 = 1. The diamond data points are the spicule widths determined form the fitting of a Gaussian to the cross-sectional flux profile. The crosses are the estimates for the physical diameter of the spicule calculated from the modelling (referred to as the estimated width). The error bars correspond to the standard error.
