Kitt Peak synoptic magnetograms for Carrington rotations 1771–1775 (starting dates: 1986, January 14, February 10, March 9, April 6, May 3). The red circle outlines a magnetic bipole which emerges near the equator. Because it is highly tilted, the positive magnetic flux is almost entirely in the southern hemisphere and the negative flux is in the northern hemisphere. A similar, but weaker, event with a smaller tilt angle occurs towards the end of this event.
