Simulation of the ionization of hydrogen in a volume of (50 kpc)3 (proper units) containing an inhomogeneous cosmological density field – the structure of the gas density has been obtained from simulations by Ryu et al. (1993). The image on the upper left hand side shows the number density of hydrogen along a plane through the center of the volume. The gas is illuminated by 16 clusters involving sources with an effective temperature of 95 000 K and emitting a total of Ṅ = 4 × 1053 hydrogen-ionizing photons per second. The ionization fraction of hydrogen is shown as 3d views of the ionized volume and as cuts along a plane through the center of the volume after 50 kyr and 200 kyr.
