Top panel: evolution of the Nusselt number for the linear initial stratification. Convective cells get established from Kato oscillations (cf. Fig. 5) after about 10 turnover times. Starting the simulation from a step (bottom) saves computing time. At the end of the runs the Nusselt numbers of both simulations are the same within the statistical variations.
