Trajectories for particles with dimensionless friction time τf = 0.01,0.1,1 obtained from the 2D Hill equations including gas drag. Pebbles with τf = 0.1 and impact parameters below a Hill radius efficiently get accreted. Larger particles of τf = 1 are pulled in from wider separations, but cores lose particles on horseshoe orbits. Particles strongly coupled to the gas, with τf = 0.01, need close encounters well within the Hill sphere in order to fall onto the core.
