Schematic representation of the effect of an emerging magnetic element at the surface of a hot massive star. A magnetic field (dashed line) rising from the subsurface convection zone threads the radiative layer and reaches the stellar photosphere. The solid, grey line shows the location of the stellar surface, as defined by the value 2/3 for the optical depth. Notice that inside the magnetic field this line reaches deeper (and hotter) layers of the star, as compared to regions not affected by the field.
