Path described over a pointing period by the line-of-sight of a detector for a given opening angle, α_d and spin axis position. The position of the instantaneous line-of-sight may be described with the addition of another angle, ψ_d, the phase. The repositioning of the spin axis position over the course of the mission defines the scanning strategy; plotted here is the cycloidal scanning strategy which is used throughout this paper.
