Here we plot the surface brightness profile of NGC 4472 (from Kormendy et al. 2009), a “typical” giant elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. There is a vertical line placed at the distance from the centre of the galaxy at the highest surface brightness for which CMDs can be made and photometered with E-ELT and JWST (coming from this study), and HST/ACS (Durrell et al. 2007).
