Fractional error in the semimajor axis a of a Mars-mass particle with initial a = 1 AU as a function of perihelion distance q. The particle was initially placed on a circular, nearly polar orbit (initial inclination of 89.9°) in the presence of an outer giant planet. The Kozai effect forced the particle to fall into the star, and we tracked the integration error in time.
