Page charges for non-sponsoring countries
Authors must pay page charges if the first author's first affiliation is in a country that does not sponsor A&A. The total cost is lowered based on the proportion of co-authors working in sponsoring countries.
Exemptions:
- Page charges are waived if the first author is affiliated with one of the countries in Group A of Research4Life:
https://www.research4life.org/access/eligibility/ - A&A editors can waive page charges, but this is limited to a maximum of 10% of all papers published each year. Waiver requests must be submitted at the time of manuscript submission. Late requests will not be considered.
Extra fees for paper length
As of April 2, 2025, a new paper length policy introduces extra fees for papers exceeding size limits (more details here).
These extra fees apply to all authors, regardless of whether their country sponsors A&A.
How extra fees are applied:
- Extra fees are charged to the first author’s institution, following the rules stated in the table above. If authors are listed alphabetically, the corresponding author is charged instead of the first author.
- Extra fees apply to main body pages and appendix pages without differentiation.
- Letters are subject to a strict 4-page limit for the main body.
Exceptions:
- Exceptions to these extra fees may be granted by the Editor in Chief in special circumstances, such as for reference papers of space missions or Letters on major discoveries.

- The article matches one of these types: Original articles, Letters
Please note that charges for additional options (color-in-print, posters etc.) are NOT covered by this agreement.
