We use the term probability distribution function to refer to the probability density function, so that p(x) provides the probability that a random variable assumes values between x and $x+{\rm d}x$. We note that, in the statistical literature, the probability distribution function usually refers to the cumulative distribution function $p(x \leq X)$.
