In fact, one should call it the Laplace force, contrary to what has become common practice. Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749-1827) was the first to give the expression of the force exerted by a magnetic field on an electric current; the force named after Hendrik Lorentz (1853-1928) is that experienced by a moving charged particle.
