Since this article was accepted for publication, the target of the Rosetta mission has been changed to 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. However, because of its favorable orbit, 46P/Wirtanen remains an interesting target for cometary space missions. It has indeed been selected for the Comet Surface Sample Return mission which is under consideration in the framework of the NASA Discovery program.
