Tensile strength for C1 to C6 silica dusts and the angular silica dust as a function of the median particle radius, determined from the volume-frequency distribution function. All tensile strengths were calculated for a VFF of 0.5 using the data and fit functions shown in Fig. 8. We also added recalculated data for monodisperse spherical silica dust measured in Blum et al. (2006, gray diamond) and Gundlach et al. (2018, black points). These data are fit using σ(r) = c • r−1, with c being the fit parameter. A logarithmic uncertainty of 38% is sufficient to include all data points (excluding the outlier C4) in the uncertainty band.
