Evolution of the particle’s speed and mass as a function of non-dimensional time τ. Mass is shown relative to its initial value. The different curves represent different initial speeds: β0 = 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5. Once the speed of an initially supersonic particle approaches β    ~    1 , it quickly decelerates. Concurrently, its mass grows rapidly.
