Sketch of an evolutionary scenario for disk evolution in Herbig Ae/Be objects (after Currie 2010). Both groups have evolved from a common ancestor (i.e. primordial, possibly embedded, flaring disk structure). In transitional group I objects, gap formation proceeds the collapse of the outer disk. In group II objects, grain growth and dust settling have flattened the outer disk.
